Porta is a tapas & wine bar next door to Joseph Benjamin Restaurant in Chester, under Chester’s Northgate Bridge on the city walls that opened in November 2012.

The aim at Porta is to keep things really simple – A relaxed, totally informal environment inspired by the tiniest independent cafés, bars and tapas bars of Barcelona, Paris and London.

Cured meats and cheeses form the backbone of a menu that is a collection of plates to be enjoyed singularly with a glass of wine or combined to create something more substantial.

Seating is informal, consisting of lots of bar stools and casual tables and there’s no need to book, just go along and grab a space.

The food itself is broadly European with a lean toward the Iberian – tapas, without being a Spanish theme restaurant. Classics like jamon, croquetas and padron peppers sit alongside dishes sourced or inspired by other European cuisines.

Address: 140 Northgate Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 2HT
Website: www.portatapas.co.uk

Opening Times:

Seven nights a week from 5pm.

Called in on a rainy Monday night for a drink and a couple of tapas plates. We were very impressed with the food, service and ambiance and will certainly return for something more substantial.
